Professor Richard Susskind OBE has specialised in technology for the professions since the 1980s and is the world’s most cited author on the future of legal services. He is President of the Society for Computers and Law, Chair of the Advisory Board of the Oxford Internet Institute, and has been Technology Adviser to the Lord Chief Justice of England and Wales since 1998.

In the 1980s, he wrote his doctorate on artificial intelligence and the law at Oxford University. His work has been translated into 15 languages and he has been invited to speak in over 50 countries. He has written numerous books, including The Future of the Professions (2015, with D Susskind), Tomorrow’s Lawyers (2nd edition, 2017) and Online Courts and the Future of Justice (forthcoming, November 2019).

He holds professorships at Oxford University, UCL, Gresham College, and Strathclyde University. He was awarded an OBE by Her Majesty the Queen in 2000.

Michael Kirby was Australia's longest serving judge when he retired from the High Court of Australia in 2009. Before that he served as inaugural Chairman of the Australian Law Reform Commission; judge of the Federal Court of Australia; President of the NSW Court of Appeal and then Justice of the High Court. Since his judicial retirement he has been heavily engaged in United Nations and other international activities, including in the fields of HIV/AIDS; bioethics; international human rights law; and freedom of association. He has always been an innovator.

In legal practice in the 1960s, he served as in-house counsel in a legal firm, a new idea at the time. In the Court of Appeal he was insistent on courtesy in the absence of judicial bullying. He was always a strong supporter of women in the law. In the High Court he was known for subheadings, the readability of his judgements and his use of international law.

In the United Nations his report on North Korea was celebrated for its clarity and for the use of public hearings and the filming and uploading of witness testimony. In his personal life, he was the first judge in Australia to be open about his sexual orientation. He was also the first to perform a hip-hop duo, still available on You Tube. He is a suitable person to judge a debate on the future of law and innovation in the legal profession

Melissa Perry was appointed to the Federal Court of Australia on 23 September 2013.

Justice Perry was appointed as a Deputy President of the Administrative Appeals Tribunal (2019) and commissioned in the office of Member of the Defence Force Discipline Appeal Tribunal (11 October 2018).

Justice Perry graduated from the University of Adelaide and was admitted as a practitioner in 1985. She was subsequently awarded an LLM and PhD in public international law from the University of Cambridge, United Kingdom. Her doctorate on State succession, boundaries and territorial regimes was awarded the Yorke Prize.

She practiced at the Bar from 1992 to 2013, being appointed Queen’s Counsel for South Australia in 2004. She was admitted to the Bar of England and Wales in 2012, joining Inner Temple.

Justice Perry was a Visiting Fellow at the Lauterpacht Centre for International Law at the University of Cambridge for three months in 2005/2006 and a part-time Visiting Research Fellow at the Australian National University in 2003. She is a Fellow and former Director of the Australian Academy of Law, and a member of the Advisory Committee to the Gilbert + Tobin Centre of Public Law, University of New South Wales, the Law School Advisory Board and the Research Unit on Military Law and Ethics, University of Adelaide, and the advisory board, Centre for International and Public Law, Australian National University. In addition, she is a section-editor with the Australian Law Journal and has been appointed as the Federal Court representative on the Judicial Council on Cultural Diversity (JCCD). The JCCD is an advisory body formed to assist Australian courts, judicial officers and administrators to positively respond to Australia’s diverse needs, including the particular issues that arise in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. Justice Perry is also the Patron for the NSW Chapter of the Hellenic Australian Lawyers Association.

Samantha Gavel was appointed as NSW Privacy Commissioner on 4 September 2017.

Her role is to promote public awareness and understanding of privacy rights in NSW, as well as providing information, support, advice and assistance to agencies and the general public. Her responsibilities include the preparation of reports recommending legislative, administrative or other action in the interests of privacy as well as conducting inquiries and investigations into privacy related matters.

Most recently Ms Gavel was the National Health Practitioner Ombudsman and Privacy Commissioner, and previously held the role of Private Health Insurance Ombudsman for six years.

Ms Gavel has also worked in senior administrative roles for both NSW and Commonwealth Government organisations. She is an experienced mediator and has significant expertise in complaints handling, dispute resolution, privacy rights and ombudsman work.

Through her previous roles as Manager, Strategy & Innovation, and Senior Claims Solicitor at Lawcover, Simone managed over 2000 notifications involving claims and potential claims against lawyers, and from 2016 to 2018 she led Lawcover’s innovative response to cyber risk, including the launch of its group cyber risk policy and related communications. Aurelie is the chair of the new Australian national committee that mirrors the international standard on Artificial Intelligence (AI ISO). Her committee not only mirrors the work of the AI ISO in Australia, but also represents Australia at the AI ISO.

She is also the founder of ‘Ethics for AI and Automated Decision Making (Ethics for AI)’, a professional working group, that will soon incorporate as a not for profit organisation. The aim of Ethical AI, is to help define what ethical frameworks should be required for AI to automate decision making processes.

Some initiatives Aurelie is currently leading on Ethics & AI: She is leading the work stream on Dignity and Agency for Identity as part of the global Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers’(IEEE) s Digital Inclusion through Trust and Agency (DITA) program; andshe is a member of the IEEE’s Ethics Certification Program for Autonomous and Intelligent Systems (ECPAIS), which aim is to create specifications for certification and marking processes that advance transparency, accountability and reduction in algorithmic bias in Autonomous and Intelligent Systems.

She is also a member of: - The Australian AI Working Group’, that is set up by Standards Australia with the aim to become the preeminent forum for exploration and discussion of AI by engaging both government and industry; - The global IEEE s’ working group for Standard P7000 ‘Model Process for Addressing Ethical Concerns During System Design’; and - The European AI Alliance, a forum established by the European Commission. Arthur Kopsias APM, is a serving member of the NSW Police Force. He leads a specialist team of officers in the collection, analysis, compliance, warrant provisioning and presentation of electronic evidence in support of prosecutions for serious criminal offences before the courts.

Donna Lawler is a Co-Founder and Principal at Azimuth Advisory and is a member of the International Institute of Space Lawyers. She is an experienced commercial lawyer specialising in complex transactions in the space and telecommunications industries.

Over almost 20 years in the satellite industry she has been an advisor to a range of commercial space organisations, including operators of cubesats, established operators of geo-stationary satellites and launch services providers. In particular, she has had key involvement in the build, launch and insurance programmes for six geo-stationary satellites on behalf of Optus and its parent company SingTel.

These include the Optus C1 satellite, which is a hybrid civilian and military spacecraft, jointly owned by Optus and the Australian Defence Forces. Her involvement in space-related programmes has also included the sale and purchase of satellite capacity, securing the use of orbital slots, advising on risk, liability and insurance issues and negotiating other civilian and military satellite-related contracts.

Prior to co-founding Azimuth Advisory, Donna served as Assistant General Counsel for Optus Satellite, an Australian satellite operator. She has also practiced technology and telecommunications law at Baker & McKenzie in Hong Kong and Minter Ellison in Sydney.

Donna has published joint papers on Space Law topics internationally and has been a presenter on commercial Space Law topics in Australia (including the International Space University’s Southern Hemisphere Space Program), Europe, Denmark, South Africa, Canada and the United States.

Legal Services Commissioner for NSW

The Office of the Legal Services Commissioner welcomed the appointment of John McKenzie as the new Legal Services Commissioner for NSW from 12 March 2015 for a period of four years.

John was the Chief Legal Officer of the Aboriginal Legal Service (NSW/ACT) for the previous eight years. He has also held senior positions at the Many Rivers Aboriginal Legal Service and Legal Aid NSW.

John is a respected senior criminal lawyer of more than 36 years’ experience, particularly for Aboriginal people and has shown outstanding achievements in improving access to justice.

John was a principal solicitor at the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody between 1987 and 1991 and in the years that followed he remained committed to ensuring its recommendations were implemented.

Supreme Court of New South Wales

Kelly Rees is a judge of the Supreme Court of New South Wales. Her Honour was admitted as a judge on 5 September 2018.

Justice Rees was raised on her family's cattle farm in the Bellingen Valley and was dux of Bellingen High School. She studied at the University of New South Wales, winning the Sir Kevin Ellis Prize for the best performance in the combined commerce and law degrees and graduating in 1991. She received a Master of Laws (First Class) from the University of Cambridge in 1995. She represented both universities in the World Universities Debating Championship, was ranked as the top Australian debater, and won the England and Wales Debating Championship. She later funded scholarships for the dux and best-performing female student of Bellingen High School.

Justice Rees was admitted as a solicitor in 1992 and worked for Mallesons Stephen Jaques from 1992 to 1998 as senior associate in commercial disputes. She was seconded to London firm Kingsley Napley from 1995 to 1996. She was admitted as a barrister in 1998 and was appointed senior counsel in 2012. She also served as chair of the Education Committee of the New South Wales Bar Association. Rees' appearances as a barrister included the Special Commission of Inquiry into Acute Care Services in New South Wales Public Hospitals (2008), Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse (2014) and Royal Commission into Misconduct in the Banking, Superannuation and Financial Services Industry (2018).

George is a well-known media commentator on legal issues and is a current columnist for The Australian. He has written and edited 36 books, including Australian Constitutional Law and Theory, The Oxford Companion to the High Court of Australia and Human Rights under the Australian Constitution. He has appeared as a barrister in the High Court in many cases over the past two decades, including on freedom of speech, freedom from racial discrimination and the rule of law.
